A Wee Bit Anal Over OutlantaCon

Monday, April 30th, 2012

One of my more charming qualities is that I’ve grown a bit anal over the years. No, not that kind of anal. That’s a given. I mean the other kind of anal, the almost over-preparedness kind of anal. I refer to it as charming because it’s afforded me many a good night of sleep instead of complete and total panic the next day or morning of. A good night of sleep enhances one’s mood and allows them to be charming if they so choose. I’ve chosen. I chose. I continue to choose. My husband is not one of these people. He much prefers the less-than-prepared way of doing things. Why? I suppose it gives him a sense of accomplishment knowing he’s done something successfully at the last minute. Well, he calls it successful. I usually want to wrap my hands around his cute, adorable little throat and squeeze.

Classic Blog Post: First Four October Horrific Halloween Picks

Saturday, April 28th, 2012

Original Publication Date: 10/05/08

Happy October!

This is my favorite time of year to get some writing done and, also, you guessed it, watch horror movies!  This time, though, I thought I’d shake things up a little, jiggle it all to the right instead of the left, aim for the middle instead of the sides or backsplash…you get the idea…and…  Where the hell was I?  Right, I was playing with it.  I mean, well, I’m taking it up…um…to a new level.  Oh, let me explain.

10 Steamy, Life-Altering Pleasures With the Half-Asian’s Beyotch

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

A friend suggested the other day that I write a post about the deck of Gay Sex cards I bought in NYC after my nuptials. As tempting as that is, I think I’ll pass. First and foremost, I don’t give away trade secrets. You want to know about all of this, you gotta be with all of this! And believe me, there isn’t enough interest in all of this since I turned 40 to warrant a post like that. So, I was back to the proverbial drawing board. But then I realized, hey, this is about guilty pleasures. I’m a guilty pleasure! Well, I’m mostly guilty of wanting pleasure, so why not a post about that whole thing? Guilty pleasures that is, not being guilty of pleasures. Pookie told me I’d be introduced to the nine levels of Chinese hell if I ever discussed his pleasure techniques…that I have improved upon greatly in our years together. And since he doesn’t want me to be guilty of pleasures, his pleasure is in withholding mine. It really is all about his pleasure, isn’t it? I digress. Here are a few of my guilty pleasures.

A Letter to Roxette’s Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

Dear Per Gessle and Marie Fredriksson,

I know your latest album, Traveling, reflects your time during the Charm School tour, but as I’ve listened to it, I’ve been doing a little reflecting of my own. You see, Roxette has been in my life since I was a college freshman back in 1988 and heard the first chords of The Look on the radio. Even the b-side of the cassette single, Silver Blue, was magic! And that’ll be a word–magic–you’ll hear me bring up quite a bit where Roxette is concerned. Why? Because in the years that followed, I’d scour record shows and import music stores for rare vinyl releases and, shortly to come, CD singles with rare b-sides. It was at one such store no longer in business called Grand Rapids Compact Disc that they saved a genuine first edition copy of your Pearls of Passion album for me. That album played a huge part in how I came to befriend, date and eventually marry my husband. See? Magic.

Classic Blog Post: My F*****g Trip To Phoenix (Or Why My Life Is A Comedy)

Saturday, April 21st, 2012

Original Publication Date: 9/28/08

So let’s get to it, shall we? I thought I’d amuse you with tales from my f*****g trip to Phoenix two weeks ago.  I had the whole thing planned out nearly perfectly!  Provided everything went like clockwork, I’d fly into Chicago first thing Saturday morning, take a taxi to the house where Pookie had been staying, pack up his car that was still there and be on the road in an hour, an hour and a half at the most.  Each day would consist of 600 miles of driving, putting me in Phoenix by midday on Monday, which would allow me to spend one full day of blissful couple-ism before his mother flew in.  Once she arrived, I’d haul ass out the following day. Does anything ever go to plan? Please. This is why my life is a comedy, mostly of errors.

Call Me Underdog: A Stream of Thought

Thursday, April 19th, 2012

What follows this intro is the result of a couple crappy nights of sleep, some dodgy days with dad out in public, and an overall need to let some poison out of my system. I tried to go to sleep Sunday night and finally gave up after a few hours. It wasn’t happening and my brain needed a download. I switched on the laptop around 1 a.m. and decided to just let the chips fall where they may. Someone on a Facebook group had referred to me as an underdog, so I started with that thought and let it blow out of proportion from here. Keep in mind (if you do decide to read this) that I was being emotional and, at times, probably overly honest. It’s also barely edited. Barely.

Here we go…

Pirated Ebooks Piss Authors Off, State “We Are Legion!”

Monday, April 16th, 2012

I have this friend. She’s a fellow author. And if you say the word “pirate” around her, this former law enforcement officer’s trigger finger literally starts twitching. Then comes the rage. Ah, but the lovely G.A. Hauser has a reason for her reaction and it has to do with the sheer amount of money being stolen from her due to pirate torrent sites offering her eBooks for free. Writing for a smaller market already reduces the amount of royalties we can make–and believe me, we don’t make much–so this hurts when it happens. It’s happened to me and I’m not nearly as big a name as most. Our fight against pirate sites is also common knowledge between authors and our readers who interact with us in person or through social media. Imagine my surprise last week when someone posted this on my Facebook wall: “Well, since no one can police ‘piracy’ and you can download programs for secure downloading or use a proxy server, who is dumb enough to PAY for eBooks at all?”

Classic Blog Post: The Ugliness We Should Never Have To See

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

Original Publication Date: 9/20/08

I enjoy horror films.  They’ve been an adrenalin rush, a curse, a healthy jolt and recently, again, something quite ugly.

Let me go back in time for a moment.  A co-worker and fellow horror film fan ushered me over to his cube one day about four years ago and said he had something to show me.  He tended to be a little more “out there” and fringe than most people I knew, not necessarily in a good way, so I tended to make the effort to stay on his good side and avoid any unpleasantness.

Catching A Memory

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

Finally getting my guy to answer a few interview questions turned out better than I’d hoped. The blog post about him received more than double the amount of traffic I usually bring in. I mentioned this to him, which prompted the response “Bet you wish you wouldn’t have asked me to behave. I might have brought in more if I’d replied to them like I do to you.” Yes, Pookie is now enjoying the idea of considering himself an entertainer. Well, if insulting your audience works for Don Rickles and Lisa Lampanelli, then maybe he does have a future in it. More important than his post-retirement aspirations, though, is that this was the first weekend we’d had together since the wedding and you know what that means!

An Interview With the Man Behind the Author…Literally and Figuratively!

Monday, April 9th, 2012

It only took…what…a year to make this happen? If there’s one thing about Pookie, it’s that he’s always got at least 4 or 5 things going on at the same time. He’s a multi-tasker, so trying to get him to sit down and concentrate on something like this isn’t the easiest thing in the world. It helped that I narrowed it down to 10 questions, so he was gracious in accommodating me so that I might entertain you. After all, there’s something to be said about the man behind the author…besides “harder” and “faster!” You know, while taking dictation.
