Operation San Francisco Signing

Monday, October 25th, 2010

While book signings always sound like fun, they actually scare the living hell out of me!  Fortunately, I recently found out that one of the authors who appeared with me in San Francisco also gets terrible stage fright.  Whew!  It’s not just me.

So I rose my tired arse out of bed last Friday at 4am, showered and then left by 4:20am for the airport.  The driver from the lot where I parked wasn’t particularly perky, so that worked out perfectly!  Nobody wants a perky picker-upper at 5am.  Pshaw.

Bullying: It Gets Better? Don’t Wait For Then.

Sunday, October 17th, 2010

I had “Robocop 2” playing in the background last night while cleaning the place up, cooking dinner etc. when I heard the 14-year-old drug dealing bully tell one of his lackies “Don’t be such a fag.” It made me stop and realize, wow, that was 1990.  Things have come a little ways since then.

The comment was meant to be demeaning to the other character, which was considered perfectly fine.  But then it was also a reflection of the time the film was made when it was still okay to say something like that without realizing the implications of the words.  We’re more conscious of what we say these days and while that in itself is a good thing, it makes it even more dangerous when someone says it, knowing exactly what it means.

There are consequences to these words and one need only look at the rash of suicides throughout this year to see this.

Things That Make You Go “Huh?”

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

First, welcome to the blog section of my website!  I’ve been blogging on MySpace, Facebook and AuthorsDen for a while now, but just never had a blog added to my own site.  So, now I do (duh!) and I’ll be adding new blogs to it on an irregular basis, plus adding older blogs that folks have liked over time to cover my smooth, shapely ass during those irregular basis moments.  See how this works?

What have I been up to?  It’s October, so lots of relaxation watching horror movies while Pookie is overseas visiting the Grandmonster.  Speaking of her wickedness, I was looking for something to watch last night, came across a disc called “The Evil,” thought it was a documentary on her that might contain some dirt and…well, it wasn’t.  It was an old Richard Crenna movie, but it was still pretty good!

We Define Ourselves

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010
Do you want to know one of the lessons I’ve learned from watching my father progress with Alzheimer’s?  Let’s start with the fact that he and my mother were supposed to be enjoying their retirement.  They wanted to travel all over, maybe move out west or up north, get a nice single floor home in the woods, go for long walks watching for deer, take long drives, visit friends, explore both of their family histories and grow old together.  It’s kind of like the American dream we’re all told to want and aim for, isn’t it?

I think a lot about the things my parents sacrificed in order to give that dream a chance at happening.  And I think about things my friends and former co-workers have sacrificed for a chance at that, too.  You begin to realize at some point that it’s a bit of a carrot dangled on a string in front of us.

Meet Debora, Maven of Malevolence (Gaylias: Operation Thunderspell)

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

It’s less than a week before you-know-what is released and I’m playing a new game called “let’s-see-how-much-weight-I-lose-due-to-stress-before-the-event.”  Hey, I didn’t say it was a good game.  I just said it was a new game.

So, I know, blah blah blah.  Affirmations, 290 W. 9 Mile Road, Ferndale, MI 3-5pm on Saturday, July 24th.

Oh!  I didn’t tell you this, though.  As suggested by some of you, I’m having some shirts and mugs made up to give away that will feature the fabulous alternate cover art designed by soundtrack composer extraordinaire Edwin Wendler!  The grand giveaway will include a mug, shirt and folder of goodies I’m putting together.  All you have to is attend and answer a semi-tough 80s sci-fi/horror trivia question.  heh heh heh  Bad!  Bad sneaky snarky gay man!

Winger…or Wanger? (Gaylias: Operation Thunderspell)

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010
This is the first chance I’ve had this week to sit down and spend a little quality time with a couple of folks from the upcoming “Gaylias: Operation Thunderspell” novel.  They weren’t easy to convince to open up and chat with me–mostly about opening up about each other…well, one of them opening up about the other while the one who didn’t open up chastised the one who did–but it turned out well in the end.  I think.  I hope.

So, without further ado, I’d like to welcome Nicholas Inker and Anthony Hamilton, two agents in their early 30s who…  Well, I’ll let them tell you.
